“Ablaze #2” Drop Vessel

“Ablaze” is a glass vessel made using many kiln-formed techniques.

First various pieces of glass are placed in a clay pot which is then placed into the kiln elevated over a kiln shelf.  The kiln is brought up to 1600 degrees and held at that temperature giving the glass enough time to melt and flow through the opening in the bottom of the pot.  This process is known as a pot melt.

After the kiln and glass has cooled, a section of the glass is placed on a drop ring. A drop-out vessel is created using an elevated mold featuring a hole through which glass can slump or “drop” when fired in the kiln. The part of the glass that slumps through the hole can stretch considerably, informing the design of the finished piece in a significant way.

Next the rim of the vessel is removed and the vessel is cold worked with diamond hand pads.
